18 Service Pillars: Stay Clear of Politics

Stay Clear of Politics

Politics exist everywhere.  In the government, the sports arena, and can even spread into the workplace. As advisors we often find ourselves being introduced into a variety of different workplaces and spaces and our ability to be adaptable in each environment is paramount. When discussions about the appropriate course of action break out, consultants should be more of a sounding board and less of an advocate.

It is easy to get pulled into someone else’s cause, especially when you feel it is just or worthy.  However, the best way to win a fight is to not get in one to begin with.  Politics at a customer site can almost never end in a positive result for a consultant. In insuring the best possible quality of service for the client it is important that consultants do not "choose sides" rather that they provide important information so that the company as a whole can achieve more. The consultant should be the biggest cheerleader for the companies as a whole and not for individual players.

That is why this service pillar is so important: Stay Clear of Politics.

We have a few great examples and lessons to learn from them about politics. When it comes to the current political climate, there is a level of passion involved on each side. Once you become involved in a discussion, it can be difficult - if not impossible - to extricate yourself once ensnared.

Once involved with workplace politics, or even once you become just a little bit too close, it is easy to become collateral damage.
